What Is Lagrange?

Lagrange is a new protocol and AVS on EigenLayer that offers hyper-parallel ZK coprocessing to enable verifiable computation of blockchain data at a big data scale, directly from smart contracts. Lagrange focuses on leveraging zero-knowledge (ZK) to facilitate interoperability between different blockchains. Their ZK system allows for generating cryptographic proofs of the state of other blockchains, which can be used by DeFi and other dApps to operate seamlessly across multiple networks.

Lagrange enables advanced capabilities in Ethereum scaling:

Parallel Proving: Lagrange’s hyper-parallel ZK coprocessor is designed to execute computations off-chain and in a distributed and parallelized way, before submitting the results as ZK proofs back on-chain. Backed by Lagrange's Reckle Trees research,  the coprocessor can efficiently parallelize proof computation across hundreds of thousands of storage slots and return a single proof back to smart contracts, thereby giving developers access to computations that would otherwise be too heavy to perform on-chain.

Lagrange State Committees (LSCs): This is a specific protocol developed by Lagrange Labs, that has launched on EigenLayer Mainnet. LSCs are a way to securely verify the state of optimistic rollups (like Arbitrum or Optimism) on the Ethereum blockchain. LSCs use a group of client nodes to attest to the finality of blocks, allowing for light client verification without relying on a central authority.

How Does Lagrange Benefit the Ethereum Scaling Ecosystem?

Lagrange Labs provides a secure and scalable way for DeFi applications to tap into the liquidity and functionalities of different blockchains, ultimately contributing to a more robust and efficient Ethereum scaling ecosystem.

  • Interoperability: Blockchains are often siloed, meaning they don't interact well with each other. Lagrange's ZK proofs allow DeFi apps to leverage assets and functionalities from various blockchains, promoting a more interconnected ecosystem. This can unlock new DeFi possibilities and improve capital efficiency.
  • Security: Lagrange's ZK proofs are designed to be secure without compromising on scalability. Its State Committees support an uncapped set of nodes, which enables super-linear economic security that scales as the protocol grows.
  • Scalability: By lifting heavy and expensive computations off-chain, Lagrange helps alleviate the inherent scalability challenges of Ethereum. Rollup developers and cross-chain protocols can take advantage of Lagrange’s ZK coprocessing to compute and prove over large amounts of data at blazingly fast speeds.

How Are Ankr and Lagrange Working Together?
