One of blockchain’s simplest (and most important) principles is in the spotlight once again.

Last Friday, a widespread tech outage crippled businesses, grounded flights, and disrupted everyday life, with cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike at the center of the turmoil. The disruption, affecting everything from banks and airports to hospitals, exposed the fragility of a world increasingly reliant on centralized digital systems with apparent single points of failure.

The disruption begs the question, what happens one day when systems don’t come back online as easily? Worries of ‘techmageddon’ are all the more significant as hacks become more advanced and AI tools are thrown into the mix.

So what lessons have we learned, and how can we use decentralization to defend against the threat of the world going dark more often? Let’s take a look.

## Serious Outages Caused by Centralization Vulnerabilities

In an Era where routine software updates can wreak massive havoc on the world as seen in events like the [SolarWinds hack](https://www.npr.org/2021/04/16/985439655/a-worst-nightmare-cyberattack-the-untold-story-of-the-solarwinds-hack), [Meta outage](https://engineering.fb.com/2021/10/05/networking-traffic/outage-details/), and the most recent CrowdStrike debacle, we should take note of prominent outages of the past 4 years.

- **Google 2020:** Affected Google's core services, including YouTube, Gmail, and Google Drive, caused significant disruption for users worldwide. The incident emphasized the company's service dominance and the reliance of many on its services.
- **Fastly 2021:** Caused significant disruptions to a wide range of websites and online services that relied on Fastly's content delivery network (CDN). Major platforms like Amazon, Reddit, The New York Times, and others were affected.
- **Twitter and Instagram 2022:** A simultaneous outage of both platforms caused a significant disruption in social media usage.
- **Amazon Web Services 2023:** In June 2023, AWS experienced a significant outage in its Northern Virginia (US-EAST-1) region. This region is a critical hub for many large enterprises and high-traffic websites.

In each of these cases, there was a failure due to the centralization and concentration of digital services and infrastructure. This leads to [cascading failure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascading_failure) as services and companies that rely on each other are taken offline. There is a clear need to take a hard look at the structure of our infrastructure to disperse operations and improve resilience.

At its core, the Web3 movement is about decentralizing not only the digital infrastructure itself but also the applications and services that run on top of it. Next, we can take a look at why blockchain is uniquely suited to bolster reliability in our critical systems.

## How Do Decentralized Systems Upgrade Resilience?

If one node goes down, a different one remains up.

That is the core premise of decentralization and distributed networks and the reason why blockchains like the bitcoin network are nearly impossible to take offline by governments or bad actors.

Blockchains are comprised of thousands or millions of different nodes being run by a wide variety of different parties. That means when applications are built on top of blockchains, they inherit the security and *immutability* of these networks.

Imagine a blockchain-based email application such as LedgerMail or W3 Mail. These dApps use blockchain for decentralized message-sending and storage via other protocols like Interplanetary File System (IPFS). This is a much better service framework in terms of resilience as it is not prone to the same centralized storage vulnerabilities that took out Gmail and many other applications during Google’s 2020 outage.

Blockchain projects like Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) are betting on the need to implement more blockchain-based decentralization into everything from gaming to enterprise cloud solutions with their [Utopia](https://medium.com/@ICPHubPH/utopia-project-revolutionizing-enterprise-cloud-technology-with-internet-computer-f35d028db775) project. If blockchains become the decentralized cure for the overcentralized digital infrastructure we rely on, then who will run the blockchain infrastructure? A study in 2022 found that nearly [70%](https://cointelegraph.com/news/3-cloud-providers-accounting-for-over-two-thirds-of-ethereum-nodes-data) of Ethereum nodes are deployed on cloud services like AWS, GCP, and Oracle. That is not ideal, of course, if you are shooting for network resilience.

More than that, the majority of dApps rely on [Web3 API](https://www.ankr.com/remote-procedure-call/) providers like Infura or Ankr for a connection to different blockchains. That is why it’s been so important for Ankr to build decentralization into our node infrastructure, which keeps Web3 running.

## Q2: Testnet Takeoff and Security Bulletproofing

April marked a significant milestone with the launch of the Neura Devnet, our dedicated testing environment. Imagine these "uses" as conversations between applications (dApps) and the blockchain itself. These conversations, called [RPC requests](https://www.ankr.com/blog/what-are-rpc-nodes-and-endpoints-the-complete-guide-2023/), happen whenever users perform actions on the blockchain. This could be anything from sending crypto to checking their wallet balance or seeing who owns a digital item. The more a blockchain is used, the more RPC requests it will have.

Keep in mind that the above stats reflect only RPC activity via Ankr’s service and may be influenced by factors such as their status as a newly added chain on our platform. However, they should paint a picture of the industry we can learn from.

A long-time player as a crypto payments blockchain, Stellar recently expanded its utility to welcome all developers to build applications on the Stellar mainnet via the [Soroban smart contracts platform](https://coinmarketcap.com/community/articles/65f9d74a58447426f74fa0f1/). Interest and activity are now sky-high as we saw a 2,161% increase in calls to our Stellar Horizon API used to submit transactions that interact with Soroban contracts.

Greetings, Neura explorers! We have launched a practice version of an IMO on the Neura testnet to give our users a chance to learn the simple process of contributing to new Neura AI projects so they are confident to delegate funds to any project once the mainnet launches.

Let this article be your step-by-step guide to completing your first practice IMO contribution process as we walk you through how to connect to Neura, receive tokens, contribute tokens – and, most importantly, **earn your early access to be the first participant in live IMOs on Neura!**

## What Rewards Will You Get From The Practice IMO?

Ankr is rewarding users with early access to new projects launching IMOs on the Neura platform. You can earn points by participating in different activities – the more you participate, the more potential to earn early access! We will be taking a snapshot of participants who will be eligible for future rewards in the Neura ecosystem.

## Instructions for Completing The Practice IMO

### Step 1

[Go to the Test IMO page](https://imo-test.neuraprotocol.io/imo/activity)

### Step 2

Click the “Connect wallet” button at the top right-hand corner of the page. Sign into your MetaMask wallet if not already signed in.

### Step 3

Once your wallet is connected, you should see a prompt to switch your MetaMask’s network to the Neura Testnet. Select the options to switch your network.

If the option to switch networks does not come up automatically, you can add the Neura testnet to your wallet by visiting [our docs](https://docs.neuraprotocol.io/develop/testnet) and following the instructions under “Adding to MetaMask.”

### Step 4

Navigate to the projects tab and select “Active Projects” to see the options for participating in one of the test IMOs. Click on either PajamaLlama AI or Bad Llama to get started.

### Step 5

In order to contribute testnet funds in the practice IMO, you will need to get testnet ANKR from the faucet located in the top right corner.

### Step 6

Copy and paste your wallet address in the faucet and click “Give me 1 ANKR Token” to receive your testnet ANKR.

### Step 7

Return to the practice IMO project screen and click "Test" at the bottom, and follow all the prompts in your MetaMask to complete the transaction.

Bitcoin's real potential is unlocked with liquid staking and restaking. Protocols like Babylon allow users to earn interest on their Bitcoin without giving up control of their assets, similar to Ethereum's EigenLayer. By “restaking” Liquid Staking Tokens, users will essentially be putting their staked Bitcoin to work again to secure PoS networks. Those who choose to restake, can secure other blockchains, boosting the overall DeFi ecosystem and potentially increasing the value proposition of holding Bitcoin.

Ankr’s part in this is creating the liquid staking token (LST) frameworks for the Bitcoin staked via Babylon. The LSTs will then be issued on PoS chains secured by the BTC staking protocol. For stakers, this means their BTC will be locked on the Bitcoin blockchain while new LSTs are minted on the PoS chain they chose to provide security for. In this way, both security and liquidity is provided to the PoS chains.
