Public blockchains earned trust by making everything visible. That same transparency is why payroll, medical records, trading strategies, and identity data still mostly live offchain. Businesses and users want the guarantees of a blockchain without broadcasting their private information to the world.

That tension has pushed privacy to the top of the Web3 agenda, and Midnight is a network built from the ground up to solve it. Since its federated mainnet launched in March 2026, developer activity on the network has climbed steadily. Here is what Midnight offers builders and how to start building on it with Ankr.

Privacy That Developers Control

Midnight is a data protection blockchain developed by Input Output, the team behind Cardano, and runs as a Cardano partner chain. Its core idea is rational privacy: applications can prove something is true without revealing the data behind it.

A user can prove they are over 18 without sharing a birthdate, or prove they passed a compliance check without exposing their identity. Developers decide what stays private, what becomes public, and who gets to see what. That flexibility makes Midnight a strong fit for identity, confidential DeFi, institutional trading, healthcare, and real-world assets, where compliance and confidentiality both matter.

What Makes It Different

Smart contracts in TypeScript. Midnight contracts are written in Compact, a TypeScript-based language that generates zero-knowledge circuits for you. Teams can build privacy-preserving apps without a cryptography background.

Public and private state side by side. A single application can keep order details shielded while publishing settlement data, or keep ballots confidential while making the final tally verifiable.

Gasless onboarding. Holding NIGHT, the network's native token, generates DUST, a private resource used to pay for transactions. Because DUST can be sponsored, developers can cover fees for their users, so new users can start using an app without buying a token first.

An Ecosystem Moving Fast

Midnight's ecosystem keeps expanding, with cross-chain messaging from VIA Labs, decentralized storage from Lumera, Celestia as the peer-to-peer layer for Zswap offers, security coverage from CertiK, and wallets like Lace, 1AM, and Gero. Production apps are live too, including Ascend's zero-knowledge prediction perpetuals market.

Builders also get real support through the Build Club and NightSky programs, and the Nightforce community stewards the long-term growth of the Midnight Ecosystem. And the roadmap is clear: the upcoming Mōhalu phase brings Cardano stake pool operators into block production and launches the DUST Capacity Exchange, followed by Hua, which introduces Hybrid DApps that bring Midnight's privacy to applications on other chains.

Start Building on Midnight with Ankr

A Midnight app connects to three services: a node RPC for chain state and transactions, an indexer for queries, and a local proof server that keeps private inputs on the user's machine. Ankr handles the node layer, giving you a globally distributed endpoint so you can skip running and syncing your own nodes.

Grab your endpoint from the Ankr RPC Service, then make your first call:

curl -X POST https://rpc.ankr.com/[MIDNIGHT_ENDPOINT]/YOUR_ANKR_API_KEY \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "method": "system_chain",
  "params": [],
  "id": 1
}'

From there, pair your endpoint with the Midnight indexer and proof server, write your contract in Compact, and test in Preview or Preprod before shipping to Mainnet. Premium plans add higher rate limits, WebSockets, and priority support.

Privacy is becoming a requirement for the next wave of onchain applications. Explore the Midnight Developer Hub, dig into the Ankr Midnight docs, and start building.
